PLJ-Mass-Air-Flow-Sensors

PLJ series mass air flow sensors are plug-and-play replacement parts that can be used instead of mechanical airflow meters.

PLJ mass air flow sensors are available for many vehicles from the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. We are continuously working on expanding the range of supported vehicle models.

Advantages

  • Increased engine power and torque across the entire RPM range
  • Improved engine performance, especially at low speeds
  • Significantly enhanced throttle response
  • Completely wear-free due to electronic measurement technology
  • Reduces fuel consumption and emissions
  • Saves approximately 1.5 to 2.5 kg in weight compared to the original part (dependent of the model)
  • Full air density compensation (altitude correction)

Features

  • Easy "Plug and Play" installation (no calibration required)
  • CO value adjustment possible via set screw
  • Installation is fully reversible at any time
  • SVE mass air flow sensors comply with the AEC standard and can be used in temperatures from -40°C to 105°C, resistant to oil, fuel, water, and high temperature
  • Fully manufactured in Germany

How Does the PLJ Mass Air Flow Sensor Work?

State of the Art

Mechanical airflow meters were developed by Bosch in the 1970s and 1980s and represented a major advancement over carburetor systems when combined with electronic fuel injection. They significantly improved reliability, efficiency, and maintainability. Some of the well-known fuel injection systems using these meters included L-Jetronic and Digifant.

The airflow meter provides the engine control unit (ECU) with a voltage signal that corresponds to the airflow. The measurement principle relies on a flap located in the intake system, which transmits this information to the ECU via a potentiometer.

However, the stock air flow meters do have some drawbacks. During acceleration, the inertia of the throttle plate needs to be overcome to move it out of the intake path, resulting in a time delay and reduced responsiveness. Additionally, the partially open throttle plate restricts the airflow, leading to a loss of power. The measuring method overall is imprecise and cannot account for external factors such as air pressure, humidity, acceleration, and even inclines. The mechanical components of the measuring principle wear out over time, which contributes to degraded engine performance in many cars today.

oday, the biggest issue with this measurement principle is the wear on mechanical components. In particular, the resistance tracks of the potentiometer often become worn over time. This leads to incorrect readings in the affected load ranges—typically at low RPM—resulting in an improper air-fuel mixture and an uneven engine performance.

PLJ-mass-air-flow-sensors from Storch VE measure the airflow and temperature with high precision using a hot-film sensor and an NTC element. Based on these measurements, the PLJ sensor's digital electronics calculate the air mass. The expected characteristics of the airflow are then applied according to the engine control unit’s requirements, and an output signal is generated. This calculated signal, along with the temperature value, is transmitted exactly as it would be with the original airflow meter.

The vehicle’s electronics then use these signals to accurately calculate the air mass flow, allowing precise fuel injection and ignition timing adjustments. Our mass air flow sensors take air pressure, humidity, and temperature into account to provide the most accurate readings without any distortions. The performance gain from installing our sensor comes exclusively from the removal of the restrictive flap, the increased, aerodynamically optimized cross-sectional area, and the significantly more precise measurements.

The installation of our MAF-sensors from Storch VE is very simple. They are direct replacement parts for Bosch air flow meters and have identical dimensions. It is only necessary to connect an additional plug for power supply between the throttle plate and the corresponding wiring harness connector. The installation can be done in a few minutes and is completely reversible.

Unleash the performance potential of your old and youngtimers with the PLJ air mass meters from Storch VE. Enhance the engine performance, responsiveness, and overall motor power of your vehicle. We are ready to take your driving experience to a whole new level!
